Quick-thinking heroes save woman in train platform fall

A woman has had a miraculous escape after she fell from a train platform and became trapped between two carriages at a station in Melbourne's east, sparking chaos for peak-hour commuters.

The 33-year-old was running to catch her train when she jammed her hand in the carriage door as it pulled away from the platform at Malvern station, shortly before 8am this morning.

She was dragged along the platform for several metres before she fell between the carriages and got wedged between the train and platform.

Quick-thinking commuters rushed to her aid and raised the alarm.

Sergeant Tim Fletcher told Seven News: "The train was still moving when she first fell between the tracks but again due to the quick-thinking passengers who applied the emergency brake, it brought the train to a standstill which obviously saved her life."

The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Sgt Fletcher said: “The lady is very fortunate – this could very well have been a fatality.”

The incident caused major delays, throwing peak hour train services into chaos.

Investigations are still underway but police said they believe the woman tried to board the train as it was taking off and got her fingers stuck in the closing door.

The driver was drug and alcohol tested and has been cleared by police of any wrongdoing.

Sgt Fletcher stressed the importance of staying safe when commuting and to stand back from a moving train.

The ten-year-old train has been taken out of service to be checked for any faults.

Remarkably, the woman escaped her brush with death with just some cuts and bruises to her face and hand.
