Live maggots and a fingernail were among a number of foreign objects customers claimed they discovered in food items bought from a budget supermarket chain.

Last week, a Richmond couple allegedly found a maggot in a jar of Romano tomato paste which they bought from an Aldi store in Abbotsford.

Since then, several other customers have reported grim finds in products purchased from the cut-price store.

One customer claimed she found live maggots in a Mozart chocolate bar.

"I opened the wrapper and there was a maggot crawling out of the chocolate bar," she told Fairfax.

The chocolate was sold by Aldi at Christmas for a third of the price at which they usually retail at department stores.

Another customer claimed he opened a tin of Ocean Rise smoked mussels to find what appeared to be the leg of a starfish.

"Some species of starfish are poisonous so I sealed it in a plastic bag in my fridge without eating any," he told Fairfax.

He said he complained but was disappointed by the company's apology.

Another customer, Tania Ewing, said her daughter found a fingernail in a tub of salted caramel ice cream bought from a Brunswick store in October.

She claimed it took three months to receive a response to her complaint.

Other Aldi customers claim they discovered various objects, including metal and parts of obscure creatures, in food items.

An Aldi spokesperson told Fairfax the supermarket had investigated all complaints by Melbourne customers, but found the problems were not widespread.
