Man dead in collision with truck in Vic

A man has died in northeastern Victoria after the car in which he was a passenger collided with a truck on a straight stretch of road.

Police believe a 29-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle on the Hume Freeway, at Springhurst, about 9pm on Monday.

The car spun 180 degrees before colliding head-on with a truck travelling in the same direction, before crashing into trees on the median strip.

A 57-year-old man and the driver, both from St Kilda, were taken to Wangaratta Hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries, however, the man later died.

The woman has been admitted for observation, while the driver of the truck was uninjured.

The provisional Victorian road toll for 2014 stands at 223, 13 more than for the same period last year.
