Phone data leads to dead mountain biker

Mobile phone data helped narrow the search for a missing mountain biker found dead in a Victorian park.

Paul Pagliaro, 47, was found next to a bike track in Kinglake bushland on Monday morning after being reported missing on Saturday night.

Senior Sergeant Wayne Spence said it looked like Mr Pagliaro suffered a medical problem.

"It looks like he had some health episode and he's then collapsed on the track," Sen Sgt Spence told AAP.

"(It) certainly doesn't appear to be a crash or any trauma of any sort."

Sen Sgt Spence said searchers originally had a 7.1km radius to comb through before Optus tracked his phone data.

"Information from Optus, who did a great job in researching his phone activity, they were able to narrow it down to a south west quadrant of that area," he said.

"Light failed us yesterday otherwise we would have found him yesterday."

Sen Sgt Spence said Mr Pagliaro did not have a history of health problems but the steep hill he was riding on may have contributed to stress on his body.

The Montmorency man left his car at the Smiths Gully General Store on Saturday afternoon and took off on his bike.

He planned to ride for about five hours but the alarm was raised when he failed to return on Saturday night.

Mr Pagliaro's family members were at the search command post when his body was found on the Easement Track in Kinglake at 7.50am (AEST) on Monday.
