Melbourne's foggy weather conditions 'extremely rare'

A week of foggy weather in Melbourne is extremely rare this time of year, writes Seven's national meteorologist David Brown .

I have been forecasting Melbourne’s weather since 1982 and I cannot recall an event like the one we’re experiencing right now.

In fact, tomorrow is shaping up to be another foggy morning, but unlike today, a freshening northerly breeze should see it lift by 10am.

The weather pattern driving the unseasonal fog is more like what we would expect in May and early June.

Can you believe that August is Melbourne’s windiest month?

The stable weather pattern will ensure a mild finish to winter, but come the first day of Spring, a blast of cold air is set to dump some snow on the Alps...timely indeed given the last fall was more three weeks ago.
