World's oldest wombat turns 29

One of Ballarat's most famous and much-loved residents is celebrating a major milestone today.

While 29 may not be a big birthday for humans, when you're an overweight wombat like Patrick, or Fat Pat as he is fondly known, it seems the perfect excuse for cake...or carrots.

Patrick, a resident at Ballarat Wildlife Park, turned 29 on August 24 and is said to be the world's oldest living wombat - and possibly the largest, weighing in at a whopping 40 kilograms.

According to wildlife experts, wombats typically live to the age of 15 and most of Patrick's species will not get to his size.

Pat is so huge he is often brought out in a wheelchair to meet and greet his adoring fans.

Today, Patrick's Facebook page featured a special thank you to all his fans for their birthday gifts and wishes.

The giant mammal, who resembles a large hamster, made international headlines after he was named one of the top city mascots in the world.

However, Patrick prefers the bachelor lifestyle despite his many admirers.

"Given that Patrick has never had children, or any partners in general, probably makes him the oldest living wombat virgin as well," the wildlife park said on Patrick's dedicated Facebook page.
