Icy blast hits Melbourne's outer suburbs

Snow has fallen in Melbourne's outer suburbs as the city saw a winter's day of sunshine, hail and heavy rainfall.

Viewers sent in their pictures of snow in Daylesford, Ballarat and Macedon.

Most places 500 metres or more above sea level had some snow. It was cold enough in some areas for it to settle on the ground.

"Snow flurries on Mount Macedon and Mount Dandenong usually happen once or twice every season," said Seven's national meteorologist David Brown.

"The polar air mass that’s moving through will clear tomorrow. "In fact, this weekend is looking good throughout south-east Australia. Perfect skiing weather. Light winds, clear sky and dry snow.

"To date, it’s been an ‘average’ winter, but having said that, the past 15 have been warmer than normal. So for many of us it’s a chiller."

Melbourne is currently 10 degrees.
