Beloved dog rescued from mine shaft

A beloved pet pooch has been rescued after becoming stuck 20 metres down a remote mine shaft near Ballarat.

Caroline Reed was searching for gold with a group of friends when she discovered the kelpie trapped.

"I looked down and it was so deep, so I yelled and a dog barked," she told 7News.

Firefighter Justin Ellis winched 20 metres down to scoop up the frightened animal, which had gone missing from its owners' nearby property at Creswick.

Concerned the aging mine may collapse, it was a delicate and tricky rescue operation.

The kelpie was placed inside a makeshift doggie bag and lifted to safety before being reunited with her relieved owner, Greg Curtis.

Vets were on hand to give the shocked pooch a check over, but thankfully she escaped serious injury.

"She's a little bit stiff and sore but she's OK all things considered," vet Ruth Taylor said.
