Uniformed soliders banned from drinking on Anzac day

Soldiers wishing to have a drink at the pub after the Anzac Day March will not be able to do so while still in uniform this year, the Chief of Army has declared.

"The Chief of Army has decreed that [soldiers] do not consume alcohol while in uniform in the public space,” Major General David McLachlan said.

The 'public space' includes stopping off at an RSL after the Anzac day march.

The official army notice states:

"Members are not authorised to consume alcohol while wearing the Army uniform in a public place on ANZAC Day 2014."

"Members are only authorised to consume alcohol while wearing the Army uniform in messes and soldiers' clubs that are located on Defence land."

To have a drink on ANZAC day in a pub or club, soldiers must change into civilian clothes first.

The new ruling is temporary, only in effect for the year 2014.

The Chief of Army is yet to decide whether or not we will see another drinking ban in future.
