Jill accused charged with new sex offences

The man accused of the rape and murder of Jill Meagher has been charged with new sex offences.

Adrian Bayley, 41, appeared at Melbourne Magistrates Court today charged with several new sex offences, including three counts of rape, relating to an alleged assault on a woman in St Kilda in November 2001.

Bayley is also charged with two counts of intentionally causing injury, making threats to kill and unlawful imprisonment.

Sex Crime Squad detectives are appealing for a good Samaritan who assisted the victim at the time of the alleged attack.

She was driving a dark blue Hyundai Excel, with sheep skin covers, who stopped to help.

Bayley is charged with murdering and raping Ms Meagher, 29, an ABC staffer who was snatched from a busy Melbourne street in September last year.

Her body was found several days later.

Her death sparked widespread community reaction including a walk of 30,000 people in Melbourne to protest violence against women.

Bayley will face a pre-trial committal hearing in March.
