Man charged over NYE bashing death

Police have interviewed two men over the bashing death of Victorian man, David Cassai, on New Year's Eve, and charged one of them with causing injury and affray.

The men, aged 18 and 24, were arrested this morning after the 22-year-old landscape gardener was attacked by a gang of men on the Mornington Peninsula.

David Cassai died after being struck when he and his friends were confronted outside a pizza shop at Rye early on Monday morning.

Police say Mr Cassai was assaulted, causing him to fall and strike his head on a concrete footpath.

Mr Cassai's family hopes to save the lives of others by donating his organs.

His shattered uncle Sandro Cassai told the Herald Sun, that it was a beautiful display of his nephew's caring nature.

"His huge heart will keep beating. It will touch someone else's life and help someone," he said.

"We don't know how many lives he will save, but knowing David it will be a good handful."

Investigators want to speak to anyone who may have witnessed or who has further information on the incident.
