A Victorian tourist on holiday in Queensland with friends has drowned after an early morning swim in a Gold Coast canal.

The 21-year-old man was with two others when he entered the canal at Broadbeach Waters on Tuesday and failed to resurface just before 5.30am.

He had been staying with a group of friends at a nearby holiday home.

Police were on scene within minutes, with one officer searching the canal before divers found the body just before 9am.

"Ultimately, this is a terrible tragedy," acting superintendent Greg Baade said.

"Sadly, this is a group of people on holidays from Victoria on the Gold Coast, and for this to happen, it's just an absolute tragedy."

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
