Vic toughens up on misbehaving councillors

Councillors and mayors accused of serious sexual harassment or threatening the stability of a local government could be suspended for a year under new Victorian laws.

Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz introduced the Local Government Bill 2018 into parliament on Wednesday after three years of public consultation.

The reforms would empower the minister to suspend individual councillors for up to a year, instead of sacking entire councils, and sexual harassment would be clearly defined in the councillor code of conduct.
