Vic social services grad jobs guarantee

Victorian TAFE students who complete a diploma of community services will be guaranteed a job in the sector for two years under a new $39 million program.

A job in the social services sector will be waiting for those who graduate between September 1, 2022, and August 31, 2024, the Victorian government announced on Monday.

Many sectors are finding it difficult to attract staff and social services is no exception, Anglicare Victoria chief executive Paul McDonald said.

"I'm hopeful that the new Jobs that Matter and Jobs Guarantee campaigns will make this essential service area more attractive to people who may not have previously considered working with some of the state's most vulnerable," he said.

"Combining a free TAFE course with a job guarantee is about as good as it gets."

The issue extends beyond just recruitment and training to retention of appropriately skilled workers, according to Victorian Council of Social Service chief executive Emma King.

"This is due to many factors, including funding arrangements, competition for workers, increased demand and the challenging nature of some jobs," she said.

The Victorian government will work with VCOSS and other community sector bodies to finalise the program's design.

"Guaranteeing graduates in priority areas a job when they finish their study will help thousands of Victorians get the jobs they want, to give Victorians the care they need," Government Services Minister Danny Pearson said.

Pre-registrations will begin in September, with job matching to start the following month.
