Vic police walk for officer mental health

Victoria Police boss and the force's union leader will walk 1000km in October to raise at least half a million dollars to help former members struggling with their mental health.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton will walk from Mallacoota to Mildura while Police Association of Victoria's Wayne Gatt will walk the opposite way starting on October 1 with the pair meeting in Wangaratta on October 23 as part of the Head to Head fundraising effort.

The money will go to the Retired Peer Support Officer program, which is run by former officer volunteers, and the walking pair will visit police stations and participate in local events.

The hope down the track is to raise enough money for a permanent facility to give in and outpatient support to former members, the Herald Sun reports.
