Vic police kick goals for mental health

Sailors, police and firefighters will battle it out on the footy field to raise money for mental health in Melbourne.

They'll play six AFL games at Royal Australian Navy base HMAS Cerberus on Wednesday to raise funds and awareness for Beyondblue which helps those with anxiety and depression.

Commanding Officer of HMAS Cerberus Captain Tim Standen says members of the Australian Defence Force, police, fire and rescue services can often be exposed to mentally and emotionally draining situations.

"Our people need to protect their mental wellbeing with awareness and confidence and avenues like Beyondblue's support service are invaluable when navigating through tough times," he told AAP.

"We're looking forward to hosting Victoria Police and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, enjoying some friendly rivalry on the field, giving back to those who give so much to the community and supporting the work of Beyondblue."
