A Melbourne man faces several charges after allegedly aiming a laser at a police helicopter.

Police say the 43-year-old targeted the helicopter from a house at Pakenham, in Melbourne's east, about 9.30pm on Wednesday.

The police air wing then directed ground crews to the home and when officers arrived, the man allegedly tried to lock himself inside.

There was a struggle and he was subdued with capsicum spray.

Police say they found the laser pointer in the freezer. They also found two fake guns at the property.

The 43-year-old faces a string of charges including endangering an aircraft, assaulting police and reckless conduct endangering life.

He is in custody and will appear in Dandenong Magistrates court on Thursday.
