A man has been slashed with a knife and another man is on the run following an attempted carjacking in Melbourne's southwest.

Police say a 33-year-old Glenroy man parked at the Hoppers Crossing railway station just after 6.30am on Wednesday, when another man threatened him with a knife and made demands for his car.

The victim refused to hand over his car and received a slash wound to the leg before the offender, described as 170cm tall with a thin build and wearing a black hooded jumper, ran from the scene.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment.
