A Melbourne man has briefly faced court over an alleged care facility stabbing that led to another man's death.
Melbourne Magistrates Court heard Salvatore Bazzano, 48, had an "extensive psychiatric history" before he stabbed a 57-year-old fellow in-patient.
The victim was hospitalised with life-threatening injuries after the alleged attack on May 10 at Preston, and died on May 28.
Bazzano appeared via video link on Friday, when the court was told he was "mentally unwell".
The Preston man has been charged with murder, intentionally causing serious injury and recklessly causing serious injury.
Bazzano had originally been charged with assault-related offences, but his charges were upgraded following the victim's death.
His lawyer said the matter would likely focus on Bazzano's fitness to plead or mental impairment.
It was adjourned until September 14, to give prosecutors time to obtain a pathologist's report.
