A Victorian man who followed, raped and punched a drunk British woman in the eye while she was trying to find her way home after a night out has been jailed.

Yarrun Morgan on Thursday faced the Victorian County Court, where he was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison after pleading guilty to rape and recklessly causing serious injury at Mildura in June 2019.

The woman, who cannot be named, had been drinking with friends at a pub before she got tired and started to head home.

She got lost and turned around to find 24-year-old Yarrun Morgan standing about two feet away.

Morgan grabbed the woman in a bear hug and lifted her off the ground before raping her.

He then punched her in the eye, causing her to fall backwards over a guard rail and tumble down a river bank into bushes.

The woman, in her early 20s, was taken to hospital and required a bone graft from her hip to repair a fractured eye socket.

She continues to suffer from nerve damage and vision problems, the court was told, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks and social isolation.

CCTV footage showed Morgan following the British woman for about two hours before attacking her near the river.

Judge Michael Bourke described the rape as a "brutal and damaging" assault.

"That you were a stranger in the dead of the night would have added greatly to her fear and humiliation," Judge Bourke told Morgan.

He also said the 24-year-old had experienced a troubled upbringing, having been exposed to drugs, violence, abandonment and "extreme, debilitating poverty" at a young age.

Morgan must serve at least five years behind bars before being eligible for parole.
