Vic appoints new fire rescue commissioner

Veteran Canadian firefighter Ken Block has been appointed as Victoria's first Fire Rescue Commissioner.

Mr Block's appointment on Wednesday comes after several tumultuous years for the state's fire services over pay deals and the role of volunteers.

The government created Fire Rescue Victoria as a way of circuit-breaking some of the issues, bringing career firefighters from the CFA and MFB together and making the CFA volunteer-only.
