VETERAN SUICIDES ROYAL COMMISSION

* The federal government's royal commission into veteran suicides will be led by former senior police officer and weapons inspector Nick Kaldas

* Former judge James Douglas and psychiatrist Peggy Brown will assist him

* The inquiry will look at systemic issues including the ongoing effects of service on veterans' mental health

* The commission will be able to examine any previous death by suicide or suspected suicide

* Private sessions will be available for people to give evidence

* Witnesses can access a legal financial assistance scheme and counselling will be made available

* The commission is due to deliver its draft report by August 11, 2022 and its final report by June 15, 2023

* More than 3000 submissions have already been received by the commission

* Legislation before parliament to establish a permanent agency focused on preventing veteran suicides will be amended so it does not duplicate the royal commission
