Vegans furious after real ham found on pizza

A Sydney vegan claims he felt horrendous after eating meat that was on what he believed was a plant-based pizza.

Posting a complaint on the Domino’s Australia Facebook page, the man explained he bought a Hawaiian pizza from the vegan range for lunch on Monday but was suspicious of the ham’s appearance.

He said he went back to the Epping store in Sydney’s northwest and asked staff multiple times to confirm it was not real meat.

“I was assured that the ham was vegan, and that it wasn’t real,” he said.

“So I ate the whole thing.

“About an hour later I get stomach cramps.”

The man said he looked at photos online of the vegan pizza and noticed the ham looked “distinctly different”.

“This is horrible,” he said.

After contacting Domino’s, the main claimed he received a “disgraceful” response.

He said the company defended the words of staff members over the photos he provided.

“I have been vegan for four years and am so impacted by this experience, as I’ve eaten pig today and feeling horrendous for it,” he said.

The man’s complaint was also posted to a Sydney vegan Facebook group and one woman shared a photo of her vegan Hawaiian pizza that appeared to have a different type of “meat”.

“Mine did not look like yours at all! I’m so sorry,” the woman said.

“Such a nightmare,” another claimed.

Others said looking at the picture it was “definitely not the vegan ham”.

It comes after other vegans have made similar complaints about Domino’s plant-based range.

Earlier this month a woman claimed her Taco Fiesta pizza from a Domino’s store in Cameron Park in Lake Macquarie had both dairy and real beef toppings.

Domino’s was again slammed in July by a Sydney woman who claimed her vegan pizza had a chunk of meat embedded under the veggies.

A Domino’s spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia it had apologised to the Epping customer and admitted it was an “inadvertent mistake which will be used as a learning opportunity for our team members”.

“Domino’s has a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee, and each of our team members works hard to deliver meals that meet our customers’ requirements, including specific dietary needs,” the statement said.

“As one of the largest sellers of vegan food in Australia, we pride ourselves on providing our customers with more choice. We have specific procedures in place for customers with vegan or allergen requirements, including using fresh gloves and cutting blades for their order.

“Because of these procedures, we have received positive feedback from customers on our vegan range. But in a busy store environment we know that mistakes, though uncommon, can happen. Where this is the case, our local store will refund or remake the order as soon as possible.

“If any customer is not satisfied with their Domino’s meal, they can contact us 24 hours a day, seven days a week via our social media channels.”
