Australia's Michael Matthews was forced to settle for fourth place in the sprint finish to a chaotic end to stage three.

Van der Poel kicked hard with 200 metres to go on stage three, which immediately gapped everyone.

Christophe Laporte put in a very good sprint to take second with Alaphilippe in third.
