Second seed Dominic Thiem set up a meeting against his friendly rival in Sunday's final after beating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets despite suffering an Achilles injury.
Before all that, third seeds and favourites Nicole Melichar and Xu Yifan were upset by Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva in the women's doubles final.
