Urgent search after 'baby in plastic bag seen floating off Sydney beach'

Emergency services have recommenced a wide scale search following reports of a baby’s body floating in shallow water wrapped in a plastic bag.

Police were called to Yarra Bay in La Perouse, southeast Sydney, about 5pm on Sunday after receiving the disturbing reports.

Officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command attended the scene and commenced an investigation.

Police Marine Area Command, Polair, NSW Ambulance and several rescue helicopters scoured the area.

Several witnesses reported seeing the object on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The search was suspended at 7.45pm on Sunday due to poor visibility and there have been no further sightings of the object.

Crews returned to the scene Monday at 7am to recommence the search.
