iPhone and Android users will need to update their devices by Friday this week, or risk losing WhatsApp, the popular messaging app posted on its site.

iPhone devices with operating systems of iOS 8 or below, and Android devices below version 2.3.7 will stop supporting the app from 1 February, it’s been confirmed.

“WhatsApp for iPhone requires iOS 9 or later,” the platform said.

“On iOS 8, you can no longer create new accounts or reverify existing accounts. If WhatsApp is currently active on your iOS 8 device, you'll be able to use it until February 1, 2020.”

How can I update my phone?

You’ll have to conduct a software update on your iPhone, which is usually available in your settings under the ‘General’ tab.

The latest iOS operating system is only available from iPhone 6S and above – meaning users of older models just won’t be able to use WhatsApp.

For Androids, you will need a version 2.3.3 or newer for WhatsApp to work.

WhatsApp rolls out dark mode

Recent reports found WhatsApp would be releasing dark mode to the application, joining the list of apps offering the nighttime mode in a bid to reduce eye strain.

Users with the beta version of WhatsApp, 2.20.13, could go into the app's settings, tap chat, and then select the theme beneath the Display category to activate it.
