The unusual new burger ingredient that's dividing the foodies

A new take on a classic hamburger is raising eyebrows because of one unusual ingredient.

The Big Pac uses alpaca meat, sandwiched between the more traditional ingredients of cheese, pickles, onion, sauce and sesame seed bun.

The low-calorie, high protein meat is on the menu at Burger Urge stores in Queensland and New South Wales, but only for a fortnight.

When the company posted an announcement of the Big Pac on its Instagram account, opinion was divided.

“I didn’t even know you could eat alpacas,” one person said.

“Not sure how I feel about this,” another said.

“This is disturbing,” one person wrote, while another observed: “Wrong on so many levels.”

But others didn’t seem too bothered.

Tagging a friend, one Burger Urge follower wrote: “I’m game if you are, bro.”

The conversation continued on Facebook, with many saying objections to the use of alpaca meat were hypocritical.

“Got to laugh at the outrage over an Alpaca burger when no one would bat an eyelid if it was beef,” one person said.

“The comments about people saying it’s wrong to eat alpacas because they’re pets… but cows are fine, right?”, another commentator observed.
