Unidentified mystery creature washes up on beach

A bizarre find on a Welsh beach has perplexed locals and experts alike.

A 1.5 metre carcass was found by Beth Janetta while she was walking her dogs on a beach in Swansea earlier this week, The Sun reports. She snapped a photo of the creature and sent it to experts to identify.

Ms Janetta said it first looked like a “cetacean” – a family of aquatic mammals including whales, dolphins and porpoises.

“Other people think it is something different, like a crocodile,” she said.

Swansea University bioscience expert Dr Dan Forman said on first inspection many might think it’s a crocodile but he told The Sun “it is certainly not”.

Dr Forman said the “big bulge” at the base of the creature’s skull is a characteristic of cetaceans, and added a lot are found “dead and decomposed” in areas surrounding the beach where the carcass was found.

National Trust area ranger Mark Hipkin said he believed it was a porpoise. Mr Hipkin was called in to collect the carcass.

“We have porpoises washing up quite regularly, as well as dolphins and seals and sometimes sheep,” he said.
