Ukrainian soldier’s touching moment at military checkpoint

This is the moment a Ukrainian soldier surprises his girlfriend at an army checkpoint by getting down on one knee and proposing.

Footage shows soldiers surrounding the car, whose occupants have been ordered out and told to stand still facing the vehicle with their hands clearly visible.

However, the scary military stop in which the soldiers quizzed the passengers on where they were headed was actually an elaborate ruse for one smitten soldier to make his girlfriend his fiancee.

After he falls to one knee and brandishes a ring, the young woman is seen covering her face with her hands in disbelief before saying yes, after which the happy man squeezes her tight and hands her a bunch of flowers.

The other soldiers and occupants of the car are then seen surrounding the happy couple as they film the tender scene with their mobile phones and applaud.

The latest scene comes just two days after two Ukrainian territorial defenders got hitched in a ceremony attended by none other than former boxing ace Vitaliy Klitschko.

The scene was held at an army checkpoint and posted by Klitschko, who is now the mayor of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, to social media.

Klitschko accompanied the clip with the text: "Today, I greeted the soldiers of one of the battalions of the capital's defence, Lesya and Valeria. They have been living in a civil marriage for a long time, but now they have decided to get married. The ceremony took place next to one of the checkpoints set up at the entrances to Kyiv. Life goes on! And we will protect the life of Kyiv, Kyiv residents and our state."

The scenes come as joyful interludes to the Russian invasion, which has so far taken more than 450 civilians' lives, according to the UN, with the real figure believed to be much higher.
