The Ukrainian government has allocated a record sum of UAH 17.5 billion ($453 million) to erect military fortifications across the country, Ukrainian PM Denys Shmyhal said in a Telegram post on Jan. 19.
According to Shmyhal, the funds will be distributed to relevant ministries and regional state administrations. He specified that the funds will be spent to build engineering and fortification structures, corresponding construction equipment, and a system of trenches and earthworks.
In late November 2023, Editor-in-Chief of Ukrainian news outlet Censor.NET Yuriy Butusov claimed that Russia is gaining an advantage in the war against Ukraine thanks to better operational planning, especially when it comes to designing a system of frontline fortifications.
“The [Ukrainian] military observes how the enemy systematically digs defensive lines along the entire front line, despite outnumbering us,” Butusov said at the time.
“And Ukraine falls behind and does not dig defensive structures, because it requires a large amount of equipment, personnel, building materials, which the army does not have and which the government must mobilize.”
