UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson says his government is concerned about a new strain of coronavirus that has been identified in Brazil.

During a committee hearing, where he was quizzed by MPs over the government's handling of the outbreak in the UK, he said: "We are concerned about the new Brazilian variant. We already have tough measures... to protect this country from new infections coming in from abroad.

"We are taking steps to do that in respect of the Brazilian variant."

He added that it was not clear whether the new strain is resistant to the coronavirus vaccines - created by Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca/Oxford - that have been approved for emergency use in the UK.
