Dustin Pourier has claimed an extraordinary victory over Conor McGregor at UFC 264 after the Irishman suffered a sickening broken ankle.

Footage showed McGregor's ankle buckle horribly as he stepped back after an attempted kick on Pourier in the first round.

McGregor managed to see out the round while on his back against the cage wall, only for referee Herb Dean to call the fight off when the extent of the injury became apparent.

McGregor was seething after the fight was called off, visibly frustrated that his comeback fight had ended in such brutal fashion.

Poirier said he thought McGregor's leg broke when he checked one of McGregor's kicks.

“I felt something, for sure,” Poirier said.

“He fractured it on one of the kicks at the beginning of the fight, and then he broke it."

Poirier was largely in control of the opening round, parrying McGregor's kicks and landing several strikes before getting control over McGregor on the ground.

After a long stretch of punches and elbows on the prone McGregor, Poirier knocked him down one last time - and McGregor's ankle bent gruesomely as he fell.

“This is not over!” McGregor shouted after the fight was called off.

Fans and commentators were left in shock over the gruesome scenes.

Poirier stopped McGregor in the second round when they met in Abu Dhabi last January, avenging his first-round knockout loss to McGregor in 2014.

Poirier’s clear superiority in the fighters’ second bout made a third showdown seem questionable just six months later, but McGregor demanded the chance to fix his mistakes and Poirier accepted the massive pay-cheque that comes from sharing a cage with McGregor.

Tai Tuivasa's stunning KO of Greg Hardy

Earlier, Tai Tuivasa produced a stunning first-round knockout against former NFL player Greg Hardy at UFC 264.

The Australian fighter needed just 67 seconds to send Hardy crashing to the canvas in Las Vegas, flooring his opponent with a big left hand.

Hardy went on the attack early in the bout, but a wild swing and miss allowed Tuivasa to connect.

Hardy went crashing to the mat and the referee was forced to call off the fight as the Aussie went in for the kill on the ground.

"He's such an animal," commentator Joe Rogan said.

After walking to the ring to the tune of 'Wannabe' by the Spice Girls, Tuivasa celebrated with a 'shoey'.

"He wanted to bang with me. I'm not the right guy to bang with," Tuivasa said in his post-fight interview.

"Pick another bloke."
