UB40 revamp classic song for football fans

UB40 have revamped one of their classic songs in honour of Birmingham City football fans.

Food For Thought is sung when the team score a goal and a new version of that, called Forever True, has been released.

The band staged a free concert for Blues supporters on Monday evening, following the side's 1-0 win against Preston, marking the beginning of UB40's world tour.

The song is included on their new album, celebrating 45 years since they formed.

The majority of the band members are lifelong supporters of the team, with drummer Jimmy Brown saying he was "born down the road" from the ground.

He added: "(Two are) Small Heathens, so we kind of had to be Blues fans."

Speaking about Forever True, lead singer Matt Doyle said: "Now we wanted something that's just for them.

"We can say: 'We appreciate the support over the years and singing the song when you score a goal, so here's something for you.'"

The homecoming gig at the stadium marked the start of the band's world tour, with performances of new material and classic songs.

The new album, UB45, will be released on 19 April.

Earl Falconer, on bass and vocals, said: "Half of it's old covers that we've done, but with Matt singing, our new singer.

"The rest of it is like new material, so yeah it's a mixture, but we're very proud of it."

After falling ill with meningitis last year, the tour is a welcome return for him.

He added: "We're just chomping at the bit to get out there again and just do it."

The band's next Birmingham gig will be in November, at Resorts World Arena.
