A driver has been charged over a double fatal hit-run in South Australia.

The Port Augusta man, 39, was charged on Saturday with causing the deaths of a 50-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman by dangerous driving.

The pedestrians were hit on Caroona Road in Port Augusta West about 2.20am on Saturday.

The Toyota Kluger driver was also charged with failing to stop at the scene and one count of aggravated driving without due care.

He had gone to the police station about midday to turn himself in, police said.

The man will appear in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court on Monday.
