Two more Australians die from the coronavirus as death toll rises to 16

Two Australians who tested positive for COVID-19 have died overnight, taking the national death toll to 16.

A man aged in his 80s died overnight in a Melbourne hospital while a Queensland woman aged 75 also died, according to the ABC.

The woman was a passenger on the Ruby Princess cruise ship.

The total number of confirmed cases sits at 3,640 as of Sunday morning at 11.30am, Victoria has recorded a total of 685 cases while Queensland recorded 625.

Victoria recorded its first COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday, when two men aged in their 70s died overnight.

A third man, also aged in his 70s died on Thursday in a Melbourne hospital.

The total number of deaths in Victoria is four.

Queensland also confirmed the first death in the state on Wednesday, after a man aged 69-years-old with “serious underlying health issues” contracted the virus and died, making him the youngest Australian to die of COVID-19.

The confirmation of the 75-year-old woman takes Queensland’s death toll to two.

On Saturday, NSW recorded its eighth death, after a woman from an aged care facility died.

The 91-year-old woman was a resident at Dorothy Henderson Lodge aged-care facility in Sydney’s Macquarie Park.

The 91-year-old woman is the fourth person from the aged care facility to die from the coronavirus.

The other residents to die at the nursing home were aged 82, 90 and 95.
