A man has faced court charged with brutally beating a five-year-old boy with a wooden stick at a home in Sydney's southwest.
The boy was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after officers found him with serious injuries at a Cabramatta home on Friday night.
He was treated by paramedics at the scene, before he was taken to Liverpool Hospital and then transferred to the Children's Hospital at Westmead.
A 20-year-old old man and a 31-year-old woman - known to the child - were arrested at the home.
Both faced court via videolink on Saturday.
The man is charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and was denied bail.
Police will allege he beat the boy with a wooden stick.
The woman, charged with not providing for a child causing danger of serious injury, did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.
