At least two helicopters and as many as 10 ambulance crews rushed to the crash.

Police said the person driving the car left the scene before officers could speak with them.

“Officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District have established a crime scene, which will be examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit, who are en-route,” police said.

Investigations are ongoing.

“These types of incidents are shocking for all emergency services and witnesses involved,” said NSW ambulance superintendent Andrew Degabriel.

“We were confronted with an absolutely devastating scene in Wellington.

“It’s heartbreaking for this to happen to such a small community.”
