Two Australian women killed in New Zealand truck tragedy

Two Australian women have been killed in a crash on New Zealand’s South Island just hours after arriving in the country.

The women from Victoria, aged 56 and 58, were travelling south along State Highway 1 north of the Rakaia River when their rented vehicle veered across the centre line and into an oncoming truck on Sunday morning, A NZ Police spokesperson confirmed to Yahoo News Australia.

The crash forced the truck to leave the road and into an embankment, coming to a halt when crashing into a fence.

The truck driver was shaken but uninjured. Seven other people suffered minor injuries in the crash, including four people in another vehicle hit by debris.

According to New Zealand online publication Stuff, the deceased had only arrived in the country hours earlier, landing at Christchurch Airport.

Police investigations are ongoing with detectives trying to determine if fatigue played a role in the crash.
