A man and a woman have been arrested after a drone was spotted flying over a prison.

Prison staff at HMP Lowdham Grange in Nottinghamshire alerted police to the potential drugs drop-off just after midnight on Friday.

Searches inside the grounds found a package containing "a variety of drugs, a mobile phone and other items" which police suspect had been flown over the walls moments earlier.

Outside the prison, a car was pulled over and a 25-year-old man and a woman, 29, were arrested on suspicion of supplying Class A drugs and conveying a prohibited article into a prison, said police.

Officers said the arrests happened after they spotted a car which "aroused their suspicions" in Woodborough.

The vehicle was pulled over in Lingwood Lane and a drone matching the description of the one seen in flight was found in the boot of the car.

A bubble wrapped package containing cannabis and phones was also seized, officers added.

Det Sgt Rachel Mayfield said: "Taking illicit substances, including drugs, inside a prison is an extremely serious offence that can cause a whole host of risks for both inmates and prison staff alike.

"This is clearly not acceptable, and anyone found to be involved in doing this should expect to find themselves in trouble."
