The federal government has pledged funds for young Aboriginal Australians in Queensland, hopeful of winning the impending Longman byelection.
The $1 million investment to Queensland's Achieving Results Through Education (ARTIE) Academy run by non-profit group Former Origin Greats will assist rugby league legends to partner with schools towards better outcomes.
"What they're doing is providing the mentor that is encouraging young Indigenous kids to get ahead," Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said.
"It's so important. Economic advancement is absolutely critical," he told reporters in Queensland on Saturday.
Former Origin Greats chairman Gene Miles said the funding boost would enable the ARTIE Academy to assist an extra 1300 Indigenous students.
"Supporting them with school attendance, mentoring, cultural activities and one on one tutoring," he said.
The government's Indigenous Advancement Strategy has invested more than $400 million in support to more than 25,000 First Nation students.
