Scott Morrison is unsurprised that US President Donald Trump won't visit Australia next month

Donald Trump's decision to skip an upcoming golf tournament in Australia is no surprise, Scott Morrison says.

The US president was considering visiting Melbourne for next month's President's Cup, but has since changed his mind.

"There's a bit on, both with the election and what's going on in the Congress and ultimately the Senate, so that's not surprising," the prime minister told 3AW radio on Friday.

"It was always a 'nice to do, if he could'."

President Trump is facing a series of impeachment hearings, while he also prepares for a US general election in less than 12 months.

Mr Morrison still plans to attend the tournament at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

"I'll be down there, yeah," he said.

"I'm just looking to come and have a good look. And it's going to be a great event, I'm sure."
