Trump Is Considering a Democrat for Top White House Post

President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz as his top choice to lead the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in his upcoming administration.

Citing two sources with knowledge of the matter, CNN reports that Moskowitz, a Democrat, is a favorite for the role, and adds that a person close to Trump’s transition team confirmed that Moskowitz was in the mix.

Although it’s unclear if Moskowitz and Trump have already met to discuss the appointment, if selected, Moskowitz will become the highest-ranking Democrat in Trump’s new administration.

While the news of Moskowitz’s candidacy may come as a surprise to some, the Florida representative has previously aligned himself with House Republicans and spent two years working under Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as the state’s director of Emergency Management. Moskowitz helped lead Florida’s recovery following the aftermath of Hurricane Michael in 2018 and initiated the state’s COVID-19 response in 2020.

Moskowitz has also shown support to one of Trump’s fiercest allies, tech mogul Elon Musk, and was the first Democrat to announce his intention to join the congressional caucus for Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy’s newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) upon its start in January next year.

Per CNN, Moskowitz introduced legislation to make FEMA a Cabinet-level position that reports directly to the president last year. He previously worked in the private sector as the general counsel and vice president of business development for AshBritt Environmental, a disaster recovery response contractor.
