'Truly broken': Tragedy as woman, 21, dies on her wedding day

A 21-year-old woman has died from cancer on the same day she was supposed to be married.

Chloe Askey, from the UK, was diagnosed just before her 21st birthday in October last year and started chemotherapy two days later.

"Her soulmate and love of her life, Hakeem, was there by her side to help her through," a GoFundMe for Ms Askey says.

Ms Askey struggled between chemotherapy sessions and couldn't do much due to the Covid-19 lockdown, her family said.

Her health significantly deteriorated after she had an operation at the start of 2021.

Eventually she was allowed home, though the family was warned she would not have long.

"None of us ever thought it would only be 3 days," her fiancé's mother, Kerry Patel, said on Monday (local time).

"Chloe and Hakeem were planning on getting married today but Chloe's poorly body just couldn't hold on long enough."

Ms Patel described Chloe as "the most amazing young lady" and said the A$10,055 raised in GoFundMe donations would go to Chloe's parents Karen and Nathan, Teenage Cancer Trust and Thornberry Animal Sanctuary, where Chloe worked.

On Facebook, Thornberry Animal Sanctuary said Chloe never lost her spirit.

"Today, she should have been getting married, but instead we are mourning her loss. Our hearts are truly broken," the Facebook post said.

"Chloe worked in our Cattery at the weekends overseeing hundreds of adoptions. She worked hard to ensure each cat found their perfect home."

Numerous people have shared tributes to the 21-year-old.

"Chloe was one of the kindest people I've ever had the pleasure to know," one person said on GoFundMe.

"When she became ill, I was so proud of how she coped, kept her spirits high and positive. She fought cancer so bravely and hard."
