Transgender woman turned away from female change rooms

A transgender woman was devastated after being told she would have to use the male change rooms to try on a dress.

Jay Campbell had already picked out the dress she wanted for a friend’s wedding but when she arrived at the Debenhams store in Glasgow to try it on, she claims she was turned away from the female change rooms by the staff.

Distraught, the young hairdresser was told if she wanted to try it on, she would have to use the male change rooms downstairs.

“I was so upset and sick of having to explain myself,” she wrote in a scathing Facebook post.

She said she was about to spend a large sum of money but was instead “treated like a freak”.

Ms Campbell has been living as a woman for the last two years and taking female hormones since the start of the year.

She said she explained to the staff she was transgender but her pleas fell on deaf ears.

“I threw the dress at her and went to the House of Fraser to pick a different one and all I can say is that the staff at Frasers were so nice and helpful,” she added.
