Tragic end to search for missing 18yo swimmer

The search for a missing swimmer has ended in tragedy with emergency services recovering the body of an 18-year-old man on Sydney's Northern Beaches on Sunday morning.

An initial search effort was launched on Saturday night when the man was reported missing off the popular Freshwater Beach shortly after 8pm.

"An extensive search of the beach and surrounding waters commenced covering from North Curl Curl headland along the coastline to Bluefish Point," police said in a statement.

Search efforts were delayed overnight before resuming on Sunday morning with the help of Northern Beaches police, the Marine Area Command, Surf Life Saving NSW, Marine Rescue, PolAir and the Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter.

The body of the man who is yet to be identified was recovered at around 9.25am.

A report will be prepared for the coroner by police.
