Tragic allegation emerges in search for missing campers

The bodies believed to be that of missing campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay allegedly may have been burned before being buried.

The pair of bodies allegedly may have been set on fire within metres of where remains were found in bushland in a remote area of East Gippsland, Victoria, the Herald Sun reports.

Human remains were found in the Grants Historical Area near the remote town of Dargo, 320km northeast of Melbourne, on November 30 — almost two years after Mr Hill and Ms Clay went missing.

The remains are yet to be formally identified, with results of DNA testing expected to take some time.

Detectives from the missing persons squad meticulously searched the scene last week, using the same arson chemists who examined Mr Hill and Ms Clay’s original campsite when they were first reported missing in 2020, the publication reports.

Police working the case are waiting on the results from forensic testing of a Nissan Patrol vehicle that has been seized.

The Herald Sun states that police are also searching for a trailer sold on Gumtree which may assist police with their investigation.
