Tragedy as man dies after 'falling from Christmas tree'

A man has died after a suspected fall from a three metre high Christmas tree in the centre of town.

A sizeable branch had snapped off the tree, and was found on the ground by its base.

Revellers leaving a night club found the unnamed man outside a town hall in Kircaldy, on Scotland’s east coast, early on Friday morning.

Emergency services were called and paramedics tried to save the unresponsive man, who was believed to be in his 50s.

He was taken to hospital but later died.

Police have cordoned off the 3.6 metre tall fir tree and officers remain at the scene.

“This is tragic news, especially at Christmas, and my thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this time,” the town’s MP, Lesley Laird, told local outlet Fife Today.

“Police in Fife were called to a report of an unresponsive man in the Hunter Street area of Kirkcaldy around 2.55am on Friday December 14,” a Police Scotland spokesman said.

“The death is being treated as non-suspicious and inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal, who fulfils the functions of a local coroner and public prosecutor.
