Trade minister China-bound to watch footy

Although Steve Ciobo is the first Turnbull government minister to be visiting China in eight months the deep freeze on Beijing-Canberra relations may not be over.

The trade minister is off to Shanghai this week and will be attending the Port Adelaide-Gold Coast AFL clash in Shanghai this weekend.

It's the second time an AFL match has been played for premiership points in China, after last year's inaugural clash.

Mr Ciobo will also attend Asia's largest food and beverage exhibition and sign a deal to have an Australian pavilion at the China International Import Expo in November.

A spokesman for Mr Ciobo said at this stage he doesn't have any meetings lined up with anyone from the Chinese government.
