Tourist missing from Alice Springs for more than a week after going on walk

A German woman is missing in the Alice Springs area after failing to return to her accommodation, possibly after walking some local trails.

Police say Monika Billen was last seen on New Year’s Day leaving the Desert Palms Resort and may have had some interest in walking the Larapinta Trail, or other trails.

A drone has been deployed to check popular walking tracks in the area and police are also keen to speak with the drivers of three cars that passed the resort at around the time the 62-year-old left.

Acting Superintendent Pauline Vicary said it was possible the drivers saw Ms Billen or even picked her up.

“At this time, the last physical sighting of Ms Billen was via CCTV which showed her leaving the resort at 10.30am on January 1, 2019. She was supposed to check out of the resort on January 5, 2019,” Acting Superintendent Vicary said.

She is described as having a slim build with short grey hair.

She was last known to be wearing a red chequered top with denim knee-length shorts and was carrying a red backpack.

Police have released the CCTV images of Ms Billen.
